In this book problems of the historical development of the Ukrainian lands during the era of Tatar and Lithuanian political supremacy are considered, from Batu's conquest to the Union of Lublin (1240–1569).

Within this period the evolution of the political-administrative organisation of the Ukrainian lands is traced in detail and the principal trends of social-economic development of these lands are described. The political processes in the 14-16th centuries are considered in the context of international relations (mainly between Lithuania and the Horde, Lithuania and Moscow). Information about stratification of Ukrainian society at that time and its ethnic structure is given; the special features of interethnic and interconfessional relations on the territory of mediaeval Ukraine are outlined. The course of events in the life of the Orthodox Church is traced; its institutional principles are characterised; union-related processes of the 15th – early 16th centuries are analysed.

Great attention is paid to the problems of the ethnic-cultural self-identification of the population of Ukraine, phenomena of the Polish-Ukrainian cultural border; external and internal factors that affected the demographic situation in the region are considered. A special part is devoted to Ukraine in the views of West – Europeans in the 15 – 16th centuries.

Personalities involved in the events covered by this book are portrayed; substantial space is devoted to citation of the primary sources. /314/
